The painting comes from the pre-eminent collection of the Viennese industrial tycoon Willibald Duschnitz (1884–1976). He was the son of the founder of the ‘First Austro-Hungarian Felt Factory’ in Achau near Vienna. Duschnitz was a friend of the architect Adolf Loos, who rebuilt and expanded Villa Duschnitz in the Viennese suburb of Döbling in 1915/16 for Duschnitz and his collection. The villa, which is excellently preserved, is still one of Loos’s most well-known projects (comp. M. Kristian, Adolf Loos, Villen, Vienna 2003, p. 46). In 1938. The well-informed and far-seeing Duschnitz managed to rescue a large part of his collection. He emigrated to England and subsequently to Southern France, from where escaped to Brazil. The villa in Döbling and several works of art that had been seized were given back to him after 1945; nevertheless Willibald Duschnitz decided to stay in Brazil and not to return to Austria. He died in Teresopolis near Rio de Janeiro in 1976, at the age of 92.
